Non Verbal Communication Skills

In 1971 Albert Mehrabian conducted a study in non-verbal communication. The results of his study have been generalised into the a rule that states communication is delivered and understood in the following way:

  • 7% through verbal content
  • 38% through tonal content
  • 55% through facial expression and body language

This is actually a gross generalisation of what Mehrabian was concluding. He studied contexts in which people were portraying liking and understanding. The above statistics are a general reflection of what happens when poeple are displaying their liking for something or when they are confused.

Why Interviews Don't Work

Companies often find the recruitment process quite difficult. I've been advising companies of all sizes about their recruitment strategy for over a decade. Although a problem of finding sufficient suitable candidates to interview and compare is common, even when there are good candidates available decision making is often still problematic.

The issue is about getting beyond a vague sense of general satisfaction and to the point of total conviction. Actually knowing that a good decision has been made. The fact is to reach true conviction about a decision typically requires evidence, guess work doesn't do it. The problem is that interviews simply don't generate the type of evidence people need.
