Coaching an Executive with Burnout and Motivation Issues
The SituationSnapshot of Context: Angela has achieved success in her career and had been performing at Director Level in an operational role for several years. Having been working in the same company for over five years she was made redundant and was in the position of assessing her options. Problems & Behavioural Symptoms: Whilst there was plenty of contracts work available, having considered her achievements and the last five years or so of her life Angela came to the conclusion that she no longer wanted to continue on her current career path. The root of the problem is not generating ideas of what to do but is one of motivation and mental attitude. Feeling that the situation is fairly bleak and that there were no opportunities Angela felt she would have to return to her previous sector and continue down a path she has already recognised as unsuitable. This is a daunting prospect and she lacked in motivation, was not taking positive action and felt as though she was not committed to achieving her goals. Desired Coaching Outcomes: Angela may have been experiencing a degree of burnout and in any event her presenting mind set did not support good decision making or sustainable motivation. Firstly in a time of radical change it is always a good idea to first check that any goals and outcomes that have been set are well formed (worthwhile, achievable and ecologically sound – with respect to the wider context of life and the people in it) Often people’s initial response to external influences and events does not reflect their long term ambitions, this can lead to bad decision making. Secondly Angela’s mental attitude and general state needed some work to ensure that it supported her short and long term goals. Format: The ‘well formed outcome process’ was used to assess whether Angela’s goals were well formed. In conjunction with this we applied another technique to ensure that Angela’s goals were fully aligned with her wider lifestyle intentions. This helps prevent any self sabotage or resistance to change. To deal with the issues of state we applied high performance state building technology, linking the states to the contexts in which Angela wanted to feel more in control and positive. Results: The subsequent follow up reports indicated that the coaching was a great success. Angela had taken steps to explore numerous business opportunities, formed some business partnerships and felt energised, positive and in control again. |
