PERSONAL PROFILE

One sentence to introduce who you are either as a professional or a graduate of a particular discipline. If relevant a sentence stating the level of experience you have in the industry you are applying to work in. Another sentence to indicate very briefly your expertise, focus this on specific activities, disciplines or responsibilities.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Month YY - Date       Job Title, Company Name

One sentence to introduce the company you are employed by, indicating the market they are in or the types of products they specialise in - even if you think this is obvious. Another sentence introducing the department that you work in and the purpose of the department.

Several sentences to indicate what your specific responsibilities are within the department.  Clearly state what your day to day responsibilities include.  If relevant mention any instrumentation or equipment that you use.

  • If you like you can use bullet points
  • To separate out each of the routine elements of your job
  • This can make it easier to take in quickly
  • And makes it easier for you to incorporate lists
  • For example lists of instruments used can go in one bullet point: instrument 1, instrument 2, instrument 3, instrument 4 etc

In addition to the day to day responsibilities and activities a few sentences focussing on non-routine aspects. This includes any activity where you have to think about what to do rather than following SOP's. Examples may include projects you have been responsible for managing or training that you have delivered. Perhaps commissioning a new piece of instrumentation.

Month YY - Month YY          Job Title, Company Name

Repeat the format used for your current job. You may consider that the time spent in the job and the skills gained will impact on the amount of space used to document that job on your CV. That is, if you were in a job for five years you will probably give more detail than for a job you were only in for six months.  Unless the work you were doing in the six month job is of far greater relevance than the role you were in for five years.  For example if you have recently changed from one field to another.

Month YY - Month YY          Job Title, Company Name

If the job is not related to the role you are applying for then no real detail is required - keep it very brief.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS & TRAINING

It is important to keep the skills you have gained during employment and / or education within the section of your CV to which they relate. If you list skills gained in employment outside of the employment section of your CV then it becomes difficult to see where you applied the skills you are listing. It is evidence of how and when you applied the skills that is most attractive to an employer.

This additional skills section is really to highlight other skills and training that you possess. Examples may be short courses attended or IT skills you have gained through self study or use.  These skills are likely to be less relevant than those evidenced by the nature of your work so they can be expressed very briefly.

EDUCATION

Month YY       Higher Ed. Qualification, Subject, Grade, University of Study

Maybe one or two sentences about the nature of the degree studied.  Perhaps focussing on specific relevant aspects without going into great irrelevant detail.

Research Project

This is possibly the most important aspect of your education, provided your project was actually relevant. If you are applying for an entry level role and have not yet gained industry experience your project is the next best thing. Employers want to know what you did and specifically what you did that was of particular relevance to the post you have applied for.  You can use a brief abstract to explain your project.  If the abstract submitted with your thesis was more than a paragraph or two then distil that down to key relevant information.  Focus on the hands on activities.

Month YY - Month YY          Other Higher Ed. Qualification etc etc

Repeat the format above if you have more than one Higher Education qualification.

The research project information may not be necessary if the project was not relevant.

Year    Name of School attended, County

A-Levels:  A Level One (X), A Level Two (X), A-Level Three (X), A Level Four (X)

INTERESTS & ACTIVITIES

Use this space to mention the things you do outside of academia or work.  It is unlikely that a stranger will be genuinely interested but evidence of your ability to socialise and / or take part in team based activities may be important. Travel, sports and hobbies are good topics to mention.
